Yes it's really quite sad.

Miss America would really be too dark to be Miss India...

they even import white women to act in their movies as Indian women...

They interviewed a bollywood producer who said it;s better to use fairer actors because they reflect the lighting better and they have to use additional lighting to show up the darker actors this was his justification for not hiring darker skinned actors.

Quite pitiful really. How are you received as someone with Indian ancestry from the Caribbean?

Quite well... but there are a number of factors at play in my situation...

Firstly because we are expats we are automatically viewed as being in a certain socio economic circle which means we are treated well regardless of color, creed, ethnicity etc.

Secondly most of the Indians I am exposed to on a regular basis are other parents at my daughters school who have lived abroad and are citizens of other countries so have therefore been exposed to more than just the Indian culture

The ones I meet outside these situations are quite fascinated if we get to talking and I tell them how Indians ended up on our side of the world... if they don't know Jamaica I just say West INdies and then they get it because Cricket is a national obsession and the reputation of the West INdian cricketers is still legend. There is actually a Jamaican who plays for an Indian cricket team here - Chris Gayle represents the Royal Challengers of Bangalore in the INdian Premier League and they treat him like a God.

So all in all - no negative experiences on my end.

My experiences in India were also positive. I found the people with whom I interacted warm. Customer standards at the hotels were exceptional and I would say among the best experiences I have had at any hotels anywhere. It was a pleasure to meet one of India's most famous entertainers. He was most gracious and down to earth.

I learned a lot about sales when I was in India but I will have to tell that story at some other time in some other forum.
